IELTS overview
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized test assessing English language proficiency for non-native speakers. It evaluates four key skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. IELTS scores are widely accepted by universities, employers, and immigration authorities in English-speaking countries. There are two main versions: the Academic IELTS, for those applying to universities, and the General Training IELTS, for those seeking work experience or immigration. The test is available worldwide, and results are valid for two years.
The Listening section lasts 30 minutes and tests your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts. You’ll listen to conversations and monologues, followed by questions to assess your comprehension.
The Speaking section is a face-to-face interview lasting 11–14 minutes. It assesses your ability to communicate clearly and fluently in spoken English through personal questions, a short speech, and a discussion.
The Reading section, lasting 60 minutes, evaluates your ability to read and understand different types of texts. You’ll answer questions based on passages to test your critical reading skills and vocabulary.
The Writing section includes two tasks completed in 60 minutes. Task 1 involves describing data, charts, or a process, while Task 2 requires writing an essay on a given topic.
